In the environmental sphere São Roque Farm is developing several actions that aim the sustainability of our activities, focusing on the water, as a source of energy that can become exhaustible, which leads us to search for innovative solutions for clean alternatives and renewable energy generation.

São Roque Farm has 4 projects that are being developed in the environmental area:

  • Distributed Energy Generation: This project is being developed in partnership with the Power Plants of Santa Catarina (CELESC). It is a mode of energy production that enables the creation of small generating units based on renewable energy - such as biogas.

The biogas derived from pig manure is produced and stored in anaerobic biodigesters, which arrives by pipeline to a Gas Central. The energy generated is directly connected to the local distribution network under technical standards of the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL) and under specific protection. In addition to generating electricity to supply the energy demand of the rural property, it will be possible to sell the exceeding energy to the public network and insert it in the market of carbon credits.

Thus, besides being an energy alternative that is not harm the environment, it serves as a new income source.

  • Carbon Credit: are certificates issued in the emission reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG).

In the Distributed Energy Generation Project that is being developed at the São Roque Farm, the largest part of the process is anaerobic, ie without the presence of oxygen. The GHG emission reduction, mainly methane gas (CH4), is obtained through the burning of this gas in the Moto-generators for the production of energy and the burning of the remaining gas in a flare. In this way the biogas is converted to CO2, preventing methane emissions, which have a global warming potential 21 times higher than the CO2 one. Therefore, one ton of methane reduced corresponds to 21 carbon credits.

It should be noted that for this whole process to achieve the desired result, the operating procedures must be in constant improvement, in order to adapt environmentally the entire production chain, since the initial management of swine manure until the electricity generation through biogas.

  • Organic Fertilizer: the solid waste presented in the decanters and biodigesters are being analyzed for organic fertilizer production.

  • Reforestation: the agricultural areas of São Roque Farm are used for reforestation with pine and eucalyptus.

Through these projects with the goal of sustainability, São Roque Farm inevitably awares its staff, partners and neighboring communities of the importance of preserving and respecting the environment, developing its activities in order to impact the least possible the nature.

The main results of the actions that are being developed in São Roque Farm have been sensitive cost reductions and, consequently, the possibility of a better economic and financial result.
